Patrick Mayo: ‘I give him my blessing’

Patrick Mayo, the father of South African footballers Khanyisa Mayo and Khanyisile Mayo, has expressed his hope for a specific career move for one of his sons that he considers ‘a blessing’ if it occurs.

The former striker, who enjoyed a successful career as a defender, particularly with Kaizer Chiefs, is eagerly awaiting a career breakthrough for his sons. Khanyisa, currently plying his trade for CR Belouizdad in Algeria, is making strides in his professional career.

However, it’s been a challenging period for Khanyisile. After suffering a long-term ACL injury in June 2024, he was released by Chippa United.

The injury has significantly impacted his career, hindering his search for a new club while he awaits surgery.

PATRICK MAYO SAYS HE WOULD LOVE TO SEE KHANYISA MAYO PLAY FOR KAIZER CHIEFS IN FUTURE

The Chiefs legend says he would love to see Khanyisa Mayo play for his former side, Amakhosi, one day. Before sealing a move to Algeria, the Bafana Bafana international was linked with a move to Kaizer Chiefs. However, the deal didn’t go through.

In his first season in Algeria, the 25-year-old started slowly, failing to find the back of the net in his first seven matches in all competitions. However, the former Cape Town City FC star is finding his form after scoring two goals and providing an assist in his last five matches across all competitions.

“I give him my blessing [playing for Kaizer Chiefs in future]. However, we don’t know what the future holds for him,” Patrick Mayo told FARPost.

“In football any move is possible, you cannot predict where someone will end up playing for which side. I personally love the club [Chiefs], I played there and I got recognised because of them. It’s such a big institution in the country.

“I know a lot about them, so if he ends up there, I would help him a lot because of the knowledge and the background that I have about the team.”
