Why Mashego tips Cassius Mailula for permanent stay at Wydad
Retired PSL striker Katlego Mashego believes Cassius Mailula should make his move to Wydad Athletic Club a permanent one, offering his insights on why the transfer could be beneficial for the attacker.
Mailula, who enjoyed a breakout season under Rulani Mokwena at Mamelodi Sundowns in the 2022/23 season, has found himself back under the guidance of his former mentor at Wydad AC.
The talented attacker joined the Moroccan giants on loan from MLS side Toronto FC, where he struggled to find consistent playing time after a stellar campaign with Sundowns that saw him score 15 goals and provide four assists in 31 appearances across all competitions.
Following his successful season with Sundowns, Mailula made a high-profile move to Toronto FC in July 2023. However, his time in MLS was less fruitful, with limited game time and only two goals scored in eight appearances.
The reunion with Mokwena at Wydad has seen a slight improvement in Mailula’s fortunes. He has featured in 16 matches across all competitions for the Moroccan giants, contributing one goal and three assists.
MASHEGO SAYS MAILULA SHOULD STAY AT WYDAD BECAUSE HE’S WORKING WITH RULANI MOKWENA
‘Mahoota’ says Mailula should make his loan move at Wydad a permanent one if he gets an opportunity, as he works with Rulani Mokwena, who knows Mailula better and has a lot of faith in the attacker.
“I think he’s in a good space, in a good environment, and with a coach who knows him and believes in him. Going to MLS was a great career move for him, however it didn’t go as planned,” Mashego told FARPost.
“At least he’s getting some gametime at Wydad, that will help boost his confidence. Even though he hasn’t recovered and returned back to his best level, he’s putting in an effort.
“What excites me is he’s contributing towards goals; he’s providing those assists for his teammates. We are talking about a young player who is still learning; he has even played for the senior national team.
“Everyone knows what Cassius [Mailula] is capable of doing on the pitch. If he can have the opportunity to stay there [at Wydad] permanently with Rulani [Mokwena], he shouldn’t think twice about it.”
