Miguel Cardoso addresses ‘reliance’ on Iqraam Rayners for goals

Despite being pleased with Iqraam Rayners’ goalscoring form, Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso is optimistic that goals will start coming from other players as well. Since Cardoso’s tenure as Sundowns coach, all goals have come from Rayners.

The Bafana Bafana striker has also scored in five consecutive matches, proving his worth after arriving from Stellenbosch FC earlier this season.

Rayners’ most recent goal also secured Sundowns a late winner against AmaZulu FC on Tuesday in a Betway Premiership tie at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

MIGUEL CARDOSO BELIEVES GOALS WILL STILL COME FROM OTHER PLAYERS BESIDES IQRAAM RAYNERS

“I am not really worried. I would be worried if we were not creating many chances like we did in the last games,” said Cardoso.

“We arrive in the box with many players, and we have goal situations. I believe that we have many goals to come from different players. We have people that can make goals. They will find them naturally.

“Anyway, it is important that Iqraam continues to get goals. But we also have other players that can get them any moment.”

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS COACH EXPECT A TOUGH RACE FOR THE BETWAY PREMIERSHIP TITLE

Sundowns remain top of the Betway Premiership with 27 points from 10 matches. They are three points above rivals Orlando Pirates, who have a match in hand.

Cardoso acknowledges that it will not be an easy race for the title, but he believes in his players’ character.

“I don’t see it being easy at the moment. But I see character. I trust the player’s character. Difficulties are there to overcome,” he said.

“I am sure we will have difficulties along the way until the end. But the importance is the outcome of it and I am sure we will come out of it in the right way.”

Sundowns will take on Richards Bay FC in their next league match on Saturday – 28 December.
