Pitso Mosimane’s Esteghlal drop points on the road

Experienced SA coach Pitso Mosimane’s side, Esteghlal FC, dropped points again following a 0-0 stalemate against Chadormalu FC on the road at Shahid Nasiri Stadium on Sunday in the Iran Pro League.

Esteghlal were a better team, as they enjoyed better ball possession during the entire match. But they failed to capitalise on the goal-scoring opportunities they created.

The overall ball possession they had in the whole match was 64 per cent as compared to 36 per cent of Chadormalu.

The draw against Chadormalu saw the former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly coach’s side stretch their winless run to three games in the league. In the last two matches, Esteghlal registered two draws against Gol Gohar and Aluminum Arak, respectively.

The last time the team won a match was in the Hazfi Cup Last 16 two weeks ago. The Famous Royal Blues defeated MES Kerman 1-0.

On the log standings, Esteghlal are ninth with 17 points from 14 outings. They have registered five victories and four draws and suffered five defeats.

Next for Mosimane and Co. is another league encounter against Sepahan FC at home. Kickoff on Thursday, 2 January, at Shahre Qods Stadium is at 4 PM [SA time].

Despite failing to get a win in the previous matches, what Mosimane has tried to fix at the club is the defence. At first, the team used to concede goals readily, as they were not solid.

Before Mosimane’s arrival, they conceded 14 goals in all competitions from nine matches. Now, they have improved a lot at the back in the last five matches, as they have only let in one goal.

In front of the goal, Esteghlal haven’t been doing well. In the last five matches, they have found the back of the net two times.
