Vusumuzi Vilakazi on possibility of AmaZulu signing new striker
AmaZulu FC co-coach Vusumuzi Vilakazi has shed light on the possibility of his side signing a new striker in the next transfer window.
Vilakazi made these remarks following AmaZulu’s 1-0 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns in the Betway Premiership at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Christmas Eve.
The KZN-based side has been inconsistent since the start of the 2024/25 season, and they are currently sitting 13th on the log standings. AmaZulu have collected nine points after winning three league matches and losing six times in nine matches played.
The unpleasant start to the season saw AmaZulu sack their coach, Pablo Franco Martin, and appoint Arthur Zwane and Vusumuzi Vilakazi as co-coaches.
‘Usuthu’ have also struggled in front of goals, as they have only scored 10 goals in the league. Their strikers have struggled to hit top form, and they rely on midfielders such as Pule Ekstein, Mlondi Mbanjwa, and Rowan Human to chip in with goals.
The Sandile Zungu-owned have Junior Dion, Msindisi Ndlovu, Senzo Ndlovu and Etiosa Ighodaro in the striking department. Ighodaro, who is on loan from Sundowns, has been the promising forward with three goals to his name so far.
WHAT DID VUSUMUZI VILAKAZI SAY ABOUT AMAZULU’S STRIKING DEPARTMENT?
With AmaZulu seemingly thin in quality in the attacking position, Vilakazi has admitted that his charges need more quality to solve their goal-scoring problems.
“I think it’s a worrying department, as you [journalists] are saying Dion didn’t have a good game, and we ended up using [Tshepang] Moremi, who is a winger, as a striker. He did very well because we identified that he has that appetite for exploiting spaces, and he might do well as a striker,” Vilakazi said.
“But it’s a worrying factor. We are still looking for a striker because even in the next game, Ighodaro will be available, but you can’t rely on one person.
“Maybe Dion is having a rough patch for now, but he’ll bounce back, and we’ll try as coaches to help him and see what can happen.
“We still have Mbhobho [Senzo Ndlovu] but he’s still dealing with adaptation, he was playing in the ABC Motsepe League and jumped straight to the PSL. So we still need to make sure that we align him in terms of understanding the demands and expectations of his position at this level.”
