Cardoso shares thoughts on the depth of Sundowns goalkeepers

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has reflected on the performances of veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango in the absence of Ronwen Williams, also touching on competition for the club’s other three reserve keepers.

Onyango was in goals when Masandawana defeated Richards Bay FC 2-0 in a Betway Premiership match on Saturday. It is also his fourth match in the league this season for the 39-year-old, who also kept three clean sheets.

Bafana Bafana number one Williams was missing for the club after receiving a red card during the 1-0 win against AmaZulu FC in their previous encounter.

MIGUEL CARDOSO IMPRESSED WITH DENIS ONYANGO PERFORMANCES SO FAR

“I don’t look for the identity of the players; we look for performances. Denis [Onyango] has been able to give a performance,” said Cardoso when asked about the impact of the former Ugandan International.

“He had a wonderful game, not the last one but the previous game that we played in the Championship [league]. He also had a wonderful game against Stellenbosch [FC] and again today [Saturday].

“So obviously, competition is tough for everyone. We have five goalkeepers, and it makes it very difficult for them, obviously,” he added.

RONWEN WILLIAMS REMAINS THE NUMBER ONE GOALKEEPER FOR MAMELODI SUNDOWNS

“Obviously, having a goalkeeper like Ronwen is clearly our first goalkeeper. But we trust them all. They were here with us and we have no problem playing Denis because he has another game to play. He gives us attitude; he gives us experience to face the challenges ahead of us. Like the other ones.”

Onyango is likely to remain in goals when Sundowns face Magesi FC in their next league match in January. But Williams will return to his position as Masandawana have three CAF Champions League matches prior to their return to domestic action earlier next month.
