AmaZulu confirm trial for Zimbabwean striker

In a bid to bolster their attacking options, AmaZulu FC have confirmed plans to assess a talented Zimbabwean striker in January 2025.

AmaZulu FC co-coach Vusumuzi Vilakazi revealed the strike force as one area that Usuthu are set to strengthen in the upcoming transfer window period.

‘Kanu’, as he is affectionately known, was speaking after their 1-0 win over Cape Town City FC in a league tie at DHL Cape Town Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

A Hendrick Ekstein solitary strike in the 19th minute was enough to hand the Durban side maximum points.

The victory against the Citizens leaves the KwaZulu-Natal outfit on position 11 on the Betway Premiership table with 12 points after 10 matches.

Vilakazi noted that they are not satisfied with the position they find themselves in going into the new year. However, he is confident it’s a work in progress.

WHICH AREA AMAZULU FC AIMS TO BEEF UP?

Vilakazi believes recruiting a striker in the January transfer window would alleviate the burden on Etiosa Ighodaro.

He went on to confirm that they are expecting a striker from Zimbabwe who will be joining them for trials very soon.

“We are still looking for a striker to add to our squad. Obviously, we are now relying more on Etiosa Ighodaro. The last time we suffered in a game was because we were not allowed to use him. So, if we could have another striker, things would get better,” said Vilakazi.

“Obviously, we have signed Sandile Mthethwa and Bongani Zungu. In other departments, I think we are still sorted for now.

“But if we can get a striker, that’s what we are looking for. We might get a striker from Zimbabwe. There is one who is coming for trials and stuff. So, we are hoping for the best.”

While he did not mention the name, Highlanders FC forward Lynoth Chikuhwa has caught the attention of Betway Premiership teams. He scored 17 goals in the Castle Premiership league, winning the Golden Boot award. Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs attacker Khama Billiat was second with 13 goals.

Meanwhile, AmaZulu’s next league assignment will be a KZN derby on Saturday, 4 January against Golden Arrows at home. The game will start at 15:30 at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
