Dan Malesela returns to Marumo Gallants after controversial leave
Marumo Gallants head coach Dan Malesela, who was placed on “special leave” two weeks ago, has returned to his position. In his absence, Sundra Govinder was appointed as an “additional assistant.”
The former Kaizer Chiefs head of development, Govinder, led Gallants alongside Duncan Lechesa in the last two games. Lechesa joined the club at the start of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season.
Under their guidance, Marumo suffered a disappointing 8-1 defeat to Orlando Pirates and a narrow 1-0 loss to Sekhukhune United. Following these defeats, the club ultimately decided to reinstate Malesela, recognising the need for stability and his experience in guiding the team.
According to a player, Malesela resumed training duties on Monday. He is expected to sit on the bench in their next fixture.
UPCOMING MATCHES FOLLOWING DAN MALESELA’S RETURN
Malesela’s return comes at a crucial time for Marumo Gallants, who are currently 13th in the Premiership standings with only 10 points from 11 matches.
His first match back will be against Richards Bay FC on January 4, 2025, at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein. A victory is imperative for Marumo, as Richards Bay is also experiencing a challenging season. The KZN club recently parted ways with head coach Brandon Truter.
On January 11th, Marumo will face Cape Town City, who are also struggling in 12th position, just a point above Marumo.
A week later, they travel to the Eastern Cape to face Chippa United, completing their Betway Premiership schedule for January. Marumo will then play in the Nedbank Round of 32 on the weekend of January 25, 2025. They will know their Nedbank Cup opponents at the draw set for January 9 in Johannesburg.
