Magesi unveil Da Gama as Clinton Larsen’s successor
Magesi FC have appointed Owen Da Gama as their new head coach following Clinton Larsen’s departure. The 63-year-old coach, Da Gama, concluded his deal with Magesi on Monday, 30 December 2024.
Larsen announced his resignation live on TV a week ago after Dikwena Tsa Meetse were humiliated by Carling All-Stars with a 3-0 scoreline in the Carling Black Label Cup held at Orlando Stadium in Soweto on Saturday, 21 December 2024.
Under coach Larsen, Magesi has only won one game, drawn three, and lost five since its promotion to the Betway Premiership from the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
Four days ago, this publication revealed that the well-travelled mentor will take over the coaching reins at the Limpopo side.
PAPI ZOTHWANE WAS IN CHARGE ON INTERIM BASIS
Before their game against Orlando Pirates over the weekend, the club announced Papi Zothwane as the head coach on an interim basis. Jacky Ledwaba stepped in as his assistant.
Da Gama was present on Sunday when Magesi lost to the Buccaneers 1-0 at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.
In a post-match interview, Zothwane emphasised that he looks forward to working with any coach the club permanently appoints.
“I am here to serve Magesi football club. As an employee of the team, if they feel that Jacky [Ledwaba] and I have to continue, we will do so. If they also feel there is a need for a change of personnel we will also definitely support that. It’s all about the team and both individuals,” said Zothwane.
As things stand, Magesi are languishing at the basement [16th place] of the log standings with six points from 10 outings.
Magesi will face TS Galaxy in their next league game on Saturday, 4 January, away from home. The game will start at 15:30 at Mbombela Stadium.
With Da Gama’s experience, he will be expected to save Magesi from the sinking ship in the SA top-flight, with the 2024/25 season approaching its halfway point.
