Cape Town City sack Eric Tinkler after disappointing run
Cape Town City have confirmed their decision to sack head coach Eric Tinkler following a string of disappointing results in the 2024/25 Betway Premiership. The club announced via its social media platforms that they had reached a mutual agreement to part company with the coach.
The development marks the end of a stint that stretches almost four years. A recent run of poor form, leaving the team 12th in the league table, placed Tinkler’s position under increasing pressure. City have three wins, two draws, and five losses in 10 matches.
This comes just days before The Citizens face Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in Cape Town.
“Cape Town City and head coach Eric Tinkler have mutually agreed to part ways,” reads the club’s statement. “The club expresses gratitude towards Eric for the last three seasons where he presided over 2nd, 4th and 5th place finishes. We wish Eric the very best for the future.
“The club will announce a new interim coach as we build up to an exciting new project for the 25/26 season and beyond.”
WHAT ERIC TINKLER SAID BEFORE CAPE TOWN CITY SACKED HIM
Tinkler identified a significant scoring drought as the team’s primary challenge. City has lost five of its last 10 league matches, including a narrow 1-0 loss to AmaZulu at DHL Stadium on Sunday. It is in an unfamiliar position for the Mother City outfit in the league standings.
With only six league goals, Tinkler emphasised the need for a clinical striker. He acknowledged the significant loss of Khanyisa Mayo, who consistently scored 10 or more goals per season before his transfer to Algerian club CR Belouizdad.
“Yeah, you need a quality striker to put the ball in the back of the net, as yet, we’ve struggled in that department,” he told the media.
