Ex-Sundowns star emerges among favourites for a top ZIFA post
A former Mamelodi Sundowns forward is emerging as a front-runner for a top post in the Zimbabwe Football Association [ZIFA].
Alois Bunjira is among the 27 aspiring Zimbabwe Football Association board members, hoping to assume office. Undoubtedly, the number of candidates vying for this post is unprecedented.
The ZIFA Assembly will elect the new president, his two deputies [one woman] and six board members on January 25, 2025.
At the moment, the association is operating under a Normalisation Committee, which was installed by FIFA.
That was after Zimbabwe had been banned owing to government interference concerns.
FORMER SUNDOWNS FORWARD ALOIS BUNJIRA IS A FAVOURITE FOR A ZIFA POST
And a former Sundowns forward, Bunjira, is one of the favourites to be voted as a board member.
Bunjira who also played for Bidvest Wits has been actively involved in grassroots football. He runs Albun Academy in Harare.
Moreso, he is part of Caps United FC’s marketing structures. Caps United is one of the traditional ‘Big Three’ of Zimbabwe’s topflight football.
In addition, six former players including Bunjira have been nominated to run for positions on the board.
Former Jomo Cosmos and Manchester City striker Benjani Mwaruwari was disqualified after falling short in the eligibility test.
Mwaruwari is set to challenge his disqualification, a move that could delay the January 25 elections.
Notably, former Black Leopards coach Sunday Chidzambwa is also vying for the board member post.
The veteran coach has made a decision to switch from the technical department to administration.
“As former players, we deserve to be involved in the running of football, in the administration because we know it better.
“Worldwide that is the case. As former players and coaches, we know better how certain decisions affect progress hence we must get a place,” Chidzambwa told FARPost.
In Zimbabwe, ex-footballers have often been criticised for lacking initiative when it comes to football administration.
However, they are determined to change the narrative as Zimbabwean football prepares for a new dawn.
