Mosimane’s Esteghlal FC settle for a draw in first 2025 match

Pitso Mosimane and his Esteghlal FC settled for a draw in their first match in 2025, as they remain winless in four matches. Esteghlal FC came into the match high on hopes of kicking off the new year on a high note against Sepahan.

Sepahan had been sterling this season, as they sat in the top three of the Iran Pro League for the better part of 2024. However, Esteghlal FC were more determined in the opening exchanges. And they surged ahead after 22 minutes via a goal scored by Kenyan forward, Masoud Juma.

They were leading at the break, keeping Sepahan at bay as they piled pressure for an equaliser. Sepahan’s pressure paid dividends in the 80th minute when Mehdi Limouchi breached Esteghlal FC’s back-line to restore parity.

PITSO MOSIMANE’S ESTEGHLAL REMAIN OUTSIDE THE TOP EIGHT

The draw means Mosimane and his men remain outside the top eight with 18 points from 15 matches. They have now gone for four matches without a win.

Meanwhile, their last match of 2024 ended with a draw away to Chadormalu, stretching their winless streak.

The other draws were against mid-table teams Gol Gohar and Aluminum Arak, respectively. Esteghlal FC last tasted victory three weeks ago when they stormed into the Hazfi Cup Last 16.

The Famous Royal Blues as Esteghlal FC are fondly known defeated MES Kerman 1-0 on that occasion. Before Mosimane arrived, they had only managed one win. However, the former Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns mentor tinkered with the squad to ensure they raised their gear.

At the moment, they have managed to account for five wins and four draws. And they have lost on five occasions.

Moreso, Mosimane has improved the team’s defence which had let in 14 goals prior to his arrival. They have only conceded twice in their last five matches. However, goal-scoring remains a cause for concern having scored three in the last six matches.
