Mosimane’s trusted lieutenant speaks on their Esteghlal challenge

One of Pitso Mosimane’s trusted lieutenants Maahier Davids has highlighted why they have been unable to easily turn around Esteghlal FC.

Mosimane and his men once again failed to hold onto their lead after settling for a 1-1 draw with Sepahan on Thursday evening.

They have now gone for four games without a win, something that has left club faithfuls fretting.

Since the start of the 2024/25 Gulf Pro League season, the club has remained outside of the top eight.

At the moment, they have 18 points from 15 matches. They last recorded a win three weeks ago when they beat MES Kerman 1-0 in the Hazfi Cup Last 16.

Under Mosimane they have accounted for five wins and four draws, while losing on five occasions.

Plausibly, Mosimane and his trusted lieutenants have managed to tighten the team’s defence line to concede less goals.

And as they head into the Gulf Pro League two-week break, Davids shared his thoughts on their situation at Esteghlal FC.

Davids stood in for the former Al Ahly and Mamelodi Sundowns coach in the post-match press conference after the draw with Sepahan.

“We had a not easy preparation even though it was four days, Iman Salimi played last week. He trained but was sick yesterday [Wednesday].

“That has been the case with us since we came in. We have been told about how the team had a pre-season, that was not good.

“Then we were affected by alot of injuries and sicknesses. But we tried our level best to condition the team.

“It’s unfortunate that we haven’t been able to maintain our playing self for 90 minutes. So fo us, the break is coming at a good time.

“We will make sure that we reach the level that is enough to get the team winning. Its important that we use the time off to recover and rest, since we had a lot of travelling,” he said.
