Andre de Jong strikes twice as Stellenbosch beat CD Lunda Sul
Andre de Jong’s brace was enough for Stellenbosch FC to secure back-to-back wins over CD Lunda Sul following their 2-0 win in their CAF Confederation Cup group stage match at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday night.
The last time the two teams met, the Steve Barker-coached side walked away with a 1-0 scoreline away from home in December last year.
Below are the talking points from this encounter.
WHY STELLENBOSCH FC PLAYING THEIR CAF INTER-CLUB COMPETITION ENCOUNTER AT LOFTUS VERSFELD STADIUM
Stellies hosted the Angolan side at Loftus Versfield Stadium due to the rehabilitation of the playing surfaces at Danie Craven Stadium.
This comes after the damage caused to the pitch by a combination of the prevailing wet weather conditions and a strenuous rugby season last year.
Meanwhile, DHL Cape Town Stadium is not available to host their match due to scheduling conflicts. Athlone Stadium is still waiting for approval to host CAF Interclub competition games.
CD LUNDA SD IS YET TO REGISTER A WIN IN THE CAF CONFEDERATION CUP
Lunda Sul are we without a win in the Confederation Cup after four match days. The side managed to play two draws and lost two matches in the process.
CD LUNDA SUL NOT CLINICAL
The Angolan side find it hard to break the Cape Winelands-based outfit’s back four, with the Lunda Sul not being clinical in front of goal.
The hosts looked to be the brighter team on the night, as the visitors gave the ball away cheaply.
Lunda Sul failed to shake things up and take command of the game in order to bounce back into the match. The little chances they got were all fruitless.
ANDRE DE JONG SCORES BRACE FOR STELLENBOSCH FC
Gifted goal-scorer Andre de Jong broke the deadlock for Stellenbosch in the 50th minute of the showdown to give his side a lead.
De Jong did not stop there as he completed his brace in the 65th minute from a spot kick.
STELLENBOSCH FC POSITION IN GROUP B
As things stand, Stellies climbed up the table to the second place in the Group B with six points from four outings.
The side still have two games to played against Stade Milien on the 12th January and their last group stage tie against RSB Berkane on the 19th January.
