Rulani Mokwena’s stance on local assistant coach
Rulani Mokwena has shared his stance on reports that his club, Wydad Athletic Club, intends to find him a local assistant coach. After the club’s 4-1 loss to MAS FES last week, the club’s hierarchy reportedly held an emergency meeting.
One resolution from that meeting was to support the coach by bringing him an assistant who understands the local game.
On Saturday, Wydad bounced back to winning ways, narrowly beating Moghreb Atlético Tetuán 2-1 in a Botola Pro League match. This victory provided a much-needed reprieve for Mokwena’s team, which had endured three consecutive matches without a win, culminating in a demoralising 4-1 drubbing.
It was Wydad’s seventh victory in 17 league games. With 27 points, they moved to fifth place. This means they trail log leaders RS Berkane by 12 points but are only three points behind second-placed AS FAR.
“We played eight games,” said Mokwena as quoted by Micky Jr on X. “We went seven unbeaten. And we lost just one game [4-1 against MAS], and it was a disaster. Like the world was coming to an end.”
WHAT’S RULANI MOKWENA’S STANCE ON LOCAL ASSISTANT AT WYDAD
Mokwena responded to reports that Wydad would appoint a Moroccan coach to join him as an assistant. He has former Mamelodi Sundowns DStv Diski Challenge coach Themba Badela as his assistant.
“I don’t know, and that’s for the club to decide,” Mokwena said. According to reports, Mokwena was given another month to improve results, with a clear points target for their upcoming four league outings.
Meanwhile, the in-form Cassius Mailula made it five assists in five matches when he set up Mohamed Rayhi for the second goal.
Rayhi grabbed a first-half brace for Wydad, including scoring from the penalty spot as their hosts scored through Mohamed Rahim.
