Chippa United left in the dark: PSL postpone match without consultation

Chippa United have expressed deep disappointment after the PSL unilaterally postponed their upcoming Betway Premiership fixture without prior consultation.

The Chilli Boys released a statement on Monday night, revealing that their league match against Royal AM has been postponed without any reason.

Chippa were scheduled to face Royal AM on 11 January 2025 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha. However, the match will not take place as planned.

The Gqeberha-based side was looking to bounce back from their 1-0 defeat against Kaizer Chiefs on 29 December 2024 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

After dropping points against Amakhosi, Chippa confirmed the departure of head coach Kwanele Kopo, who had been at the helm for 12 months. Chippa claimed that Kopo opted against extending his stay with the club as his contract was expiring on 1 January 2025.

Thabo September, who served as assistant coach to the former Pretoria Callies mentor, has been tasked with leading the team for the remainder of the season.

Since the start of the 2024 /25 campaign, Chippa have won four league games, drawn two, and lost five times in 11 matches. They are currently 10th in the log standings with 14 points.

Chippa United said the last-minute decision came after all the necessary arrangements, including the preparation of the match venue, were made.

“To our supporters, Chippa United announces with disappointment that our scheduled fixture against Royal AM, set for 11 January 2025 at 17:45 in Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, has been postponed by the league without giving a reason,” Chippa announced.

“The decision made by the Premier Soccer League [PSL] at the last minute comes after all the necessary arrangements, including logistics and venue preparation, had been finalised. Despite the disruption caused, no reason for this postponement have been provided to us.

“We encourage supporters who were planning to purchase tickets for this match to hold off until further notice. We apologise for this inconvenience and we will communicate any updates regarding the rescheduled date as soon as the PSL provides clarity.”
