What Oswin Appollis told Doctor Khumalo about Chiefs interest
Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana legend Doctor Khumalo has revealed details of his conversation with Oswin Appollis regarding Amakhosi’s interest in the winger’s services.
The chat between Appollis and Amakhosi legend Khumalo unfolded following Bafana Bafana’s resounding 3-0 victory over South Sudan in their final match of 2024 in November.
In that match, Appollis was awarded the Man of the Match award for his impressive display at a packed Cape Town Stadium.
Khumalo, intrigued by the winger’s impressive performances, took the opportunity to inquire about Appollis’s failed transfer deal to Chiefs, a move that had been heavily speculated before the start of the 2024/25 season.
Appollis, whose star has risen while playing for Polokwane City FC, has attracted significant interest from top clubs, including MC Alger, Esperance, Orlando Pirates, and Mamelodi Sundowns. However, none of these potential transfers materialised.
OSWIN APPOLLIS OPENS UP TO DOCTOR KHUMALO ON CHIEFS INTEREST
According to recent reports, Pirates have rekindled their interest in the talented winger and are currently considered the frontrunners in the race for his signature.
Curious about Appollis’s failed move to Naturena, Khumalo inquired about the reasons behind the stalled transfer. “One game of Bafana Bafana in Cape Town, Appollis was Man of the Match, and I handed over the cheque. So I called him to the side as I really wanted to know what’s blocking him from joining Chiefs,” he said on SoccerZone.
Appollis expressed his own bewilderment in a chat with Khumalo, stating,” It’s not me coach. It’s not me legend. I don’t know why am I not able to join Chiefs”.
Khumalo added: “But I asked him, ‘What do you want?’ and he said, ‘I want to grow’. “I wondered how Appollis wants to grow because growth can happen in many different ways. I asked if he wanted to grow in terms of football or what, and he answered, ‘Yes, maybe something that can be challenging’.
KHUMALO SAYS APPOLLIS WOULD BE A GREAT ACQUISITION FOR AMAKHOSI
“I am not taking anything away from Polokwane City, but this is a player that at least I did hear what he had to say, and I think he would be a good acquisition for Kaizer Chiefs.”
Appollis’s impressive performances have not only garnered club interest but have also solidified his place in Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana squad. The 23-year-old played a key role in Bafana’s successful qualification for the upcoming 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
Meanwhile, Lance Davids, Appollis’s agent, also once shed light on the situation, revealing that Chiefs had indeed shown strong interest in the winger prior to the transfer window closing on September 20th.
“I think the owner of Polokwane [Johnny Mogaladi] just wanted the transfer fee paid in one instalment; they wanted all the money upfront, and I don’t think Chiefs had the capacity at that time. Kaizer Motaung Jr was pushing; even Bobby Motaung was pushing to make this deal happen.”
