Why PSL cancelled Chippa United and Royal AM match

Following Chippa United’s announcement that their Betway Premiership match against Royal AM had been postponed, new details have emerged regarding the PSL’s decision.

On Monday evening, The Chilli Boys issued a statement expressing their surprise at the sudden postponement of their match against Royal AM, stating that no reason for the postponement had been provided by the League.

Chippa United were scheduled to face Royal AM in a league match on the 11th of January 2025 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium before the match was called off.

In what comes as a new development to the matter, SABC Sport has reported that Royal AM cannot honour the fixture after their players refused to return to training. The players are demanding the payment of their outstanding December salaries.

In the past few months, Royal AM have been surrounded by bad publicity, which includes a FIFA transfer ban due to R15 million owed to former striker Samir Nurkovic.

The president of Thwihli Thwahla, Shawn Mkhize, is also alleged to owe SARS R40 million in tax evasion. In November 2024, the controversial businesswoman saw his multiple properties raided by police and SARS officials.

According to the public broadcaster, Royal AM players approached the PSL, requesting to reschedule the next match against Chippa.

Earlier this season, Royal AM have also had to pull out of their participation in the DStv Diski Challenge [DDC] due to the unavailability of players.

With the John Maduna-coached team not allowed to sign new players due to the FIFA ban, they are using most of the DDC players to compete in the Premiership.

Royal AM have been struggling for form since the start of the 2024/25 campaign, and they are in the relegation zone in 15th position in the log standings.

The KZN side has registered only one win in the league, drawing five and losing on five occasions. Royal AM have collected eight points after 11 games played.
