‘It’s a team thing’ – Chiefs players address lack of clean sheets

Kaizer Chiefs players Bruce Bvuma and Thatayaone Ditlhokwe have had their say on the team’s inability to keep as many clean sheets this season under the guidance of coach Nasreddine Nabi.

Amakhosi have only two clean sheets in all competitions this season, one in the league and one in the Carling knockout Cup.

The issue of defence has also contributed to Chiefs’ failure to win games even where they dominated. They have let in 14 goals in the Betway Premiership, a second-joint-worst defensive record which they share with Royal AM.

While addressing the media at the Kaizer Chiefs Village in Naturena ahead of their league game against Stellenbosch FC on Wednesday, Bvuma and Ditlhokwe admitted that they need to improve and defend as a collective unit.

BRUCE BVUMA SHARES HIS THOUGHTS ON THE LACK OF CLEAN SHEETS

“Yes. We only have one clean sheet in the league. I wouldn’t say the problem is the defence, goalkeepers or midfielders. But it’s a team thing,” said Bvuma.

“We need to defend well as a team because defending obviously starts from up front. If our strikers are defending well or doing the job that they have to do in terms of defensive work, we wouldn’t be conceding as many goals as we did. So it’s all about teamwork. I wouldn’t say it’s a defensive thing.”

THATAYAONE DITLHOKWE AGREES WITH HIS KAIZER CHIEFS TEAMMATE ON WHAT THEY SHOULD WORK ON

Defender Thatayaone Ditlhokwe also echoes Bvuma’s sentiment, saying more work needs to be done to improve the situation.

“Obviously, it’s not a good thing to always concede each and every game as a defender. As a defender, when you keep a clean sheet, it’s like you have scored a goal,” he said.

“We have been hired to defend. So it’s all about always watching the videos to see what always goes wrong so that we can try to rectify.”

Amakhosi will take on Stellenbosch at the FNB Stadium on Wednesday at 19:30. The Soweto giants will be looking for a positive result after just one win in the last five matches.
