Mpho Makola’s honest assessment of Orlando Pirates this season
Ex-footballer Mpho Makola has made an honest assessment of his former team, Orlando Pirates, urging them to arrest what could be their undoing.
Pirates are bidding to end Mamelodi Sundowns stranglehold of the league title. So, far they are the only team that has presented their credentials as strong title contenders.
Pirates are three points shy of Betway Premiership log leaders, Mamelodi Sundowns.
The two contenders, Sundowns and Pirates have played 11 matches apiece, with the champions sitting on 30 points, while Bucs have 27.
Sundowns lost once, while Pirates lost twice at the hands of Cape Town based teams, Stellenbosch and Cape Town City. Jose Riveiro and his men have lost once in every five matches they played.
Nevertheless, Makola who spent the better part of career at the Soweto giants thinks this season’s title race may go down to the wire.
The 38-year-old says the points difference between Sundowns and Pirates will be marginal.
WHAT EX-FOOTBALLER MPHO MAKOLA SAID
In an interview with FARPost, Makola said coach Riveiro must ensure they arrest inconsistence issues.
“I’m all smiles, each time I get to talk about Orlando Pirates. Once a Pirate, always a Pirate.
“To be honest, I am excited. Right now, they have all the ingredients to win it. But it’s just a matter of trying at best to be consistent.
“If they can be able to be consistent, I don’t see what can stop them. Of all the seasons, this is the season that I feel my former team have the character to win the league.
“It’s still far from the homestretch, meaning that there is more time to correct and even beef up the team before the season ends.
“If you notice well that, Sundowns may lose in Africa but in the league they hardly drop points. That is why they have collected as many titles in the recent past.
“For me, Pirates are the best team this season, they have everything that is needed to win the league. The backbone of the team has been together for a while now,” Makola told FARPost.
