Makhaula assesses Thalente Mbatha’s impact at Pirates

Orlando Pirates midfielder Makhehlene Makhaula has offered his assessment of Thalente Mbatha’s impact since joining the Buccaneers from SuperSport United.

Makhaula and Mbatha are no strangers. The duo played together for Highlands Park, who are currently competing in the SAFA Gauteng ABC Motsepe League. They reunited at the Bucs when Mbatha was loaned out by Matsatsantsa.

The Durban-born star, Mbatha, is in his second season with the Buccaneers and has proven he isn’t just a Pirates star player. He is a cracking package, a workhorse, and an ever-reliable player when you need him the most.

In the current campaign, the 24-year-old has made 22 appearances across all competitions for the Jose Riveiro-coached side and contributed four goals.

The talented central midfielder, Mbatha, played an important role in helping the Sea Robbers qualify for the CAF Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in 10 years. He scored a spectacular goal when Pirates edged visiting Algeria’s CR Belouizdad 2-1 this past Sunday at Orlando Stadium.

MAKHEHLENE MAKHAULA’S TAKE ON THALENTE MBATHA PERFORMANCES

Makhaula expressed his satisfaction with the Bafana Bafana midfielder’s stellar performances. He revealed how discipline has contributed significantly to the ex-Matsatsatsa man’s success.

Notably, the veteran midfielder, Makhaula, added that he aims to leave a positive legacy for Mbatha when he retires.

“I think he is going far. I’m happy with his progress because he always listens to me,” said the 35-year-old Makhaula.

“Like I said in all the other interviews I have had, we always call each other, check up on each other, and chat about our performances.

“We also check our games when we were playing for different teams. He is a boy who is very disciplined. When I retire, I want to leave him with a good legacy.”
