Stellenbosch show interest in Marumo Gallants midfielder
Stellenbosch FC have shown interest in signing Marumo Gallants midfielder Thapelo Mokobodi as the club looks to strengthen its squad.
Following Stellenbosch FC’s 2-0 victory over Mali’s Stade de Malien in the CAF Confederation Cup group stage, coach Steve Barker reiterated the club’s focus on strengthening the squad and identifying talent for acquisition.
Barker emphasised that this approach, aimed at maintaining the club’s competitiveness, will remain consistent throughout the current transfer window.
“…If you look at the January window and the last three windows, I think we have done the best. We have been good. I don’t see why this window will be any different,” said Barker.
Mokobodi, a central midfielder, has been with Gallants since September 2023. In the current campaign, he has featured in 10 games across all competitions for Bahlabane ba Ntwa.
Due to their hectic schedule, the Cape Winelands-based outfit is keen to strengthen its midfield. Stellies are in the final eight of the CAF inter-club tournament following their win against Stade de Malien. As things stand, the 22-year-old Mokobodi appears to be among the targets for Stellies.
THAPELO MOKOBODI’S AGENT CONFIRMS STELLENBOSCH FC INTEREST
This publication reached out to the player’s agent, Nimrod Mbhalati of Nida Sports Agency, who confirmed that, indeed, Stellenbosch are interested in the player, but everything is still at the premature stage.
“Yes, there is interest in the boy not only from the team mentioned but also from two other teams that have inquired about him, though it’s nothing concrete for now,” Mbhalati told FARPost.
“But I’m happy for him. It’s only halfway through the season, but he is already attracting interest from other clubs. This shows how good the player is; obviously, his teammates should be given credit. Also, remember it’s his first season in the Premier League.
“People have yet to see the best of this boy. He is one of the best passers of the ball, so yeah, let’s wait and see.”
However, there is still no indication of whether Gallants wants to sell him, despite the gifted central midfielder being linked with a potential move to Stellenbosch.
Meanwhile, Barker’s side has also registered interest in TS Galaxy’s central midfielder, Thato Khiba.
