Khuzwayo lifts lid on Pirates salary: ‘I was paid R15 million’
Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brilliant Khuzwayo has lifted the lid on his blockbuster salary at Orlando Pirates, disclosing that he was paid R15 million.
The retired goalie had an abrupt end to his promising career after being forced into retirement at the age of 29 due to an ankle injury.
Khuzwayo retired while he was in the books of The Buccaneers after completing a high-profile move from arch-rivals Chiefs.
The former Bafana Bafana international joined Pirates in July 2018 from Chiefs. However, the keeper called time to his playing career in 2019 without making an official appearance for The Ghosts.
During his time at Chiefs, Khuzwayo spent most of his time as an understudy to Itumeleng Khune, which prompted him to leave Amakhosi to find a new challenge.
Despite playing second fiddle to Khune, the KZN-born goalkeeper proved his qualities whenever he was called upon in the starting line-up. Khuzwayo has over 30 matches under his name at Chiefs, accompanied by two league titles and an MTN8 silverware.
BRILLIANT KHUZWAYO SHARES DETAILS OF HIS CONTRACT AT PIRATES
In a conversation with the Soccer Beat podcast on YouTube, Brilliant Khuzwayo opened up on his contract at Pirates, stating that his five-year contract was worth R15 million.
Khuzwayo also revealed that his contract had a clause that stipulated that he’d be the first-choice goalkeeper at Pirates.
“I spoke to Dr Irvin Khoza a year before my contract ended [at Chiefs] and then called Bobby [Motaung]. He [Motaung] gave me a new contract, and I told him I’m not going sign it,” the shot-stopper said.
“Bobby told me that I must tell Dr Kaizer Motaung that I’m not going sign the contract; I called the meeting with Bobby, Dr Motaung, and the head coach then was Steve Komphela. They asked me where I was going, but I couldn’t say.
“I signed a contract with Pirates in October before my contract entered the last six months. It was a three-year contract, but the day I went to sign, Dr Irvin Khoza called me and said I must come to the office.
“So I went to the office, and he just gave me a five-year contract. The contract changed from the salary that I was going to get; I was happy to get the contract because the money went up. Initially, the contract stated that I was going to be the number [goalkeeper] for Pirates, and it had everything. I think the contract was R15 million in total for five years.”
