What makes Malibongwe Khoza so special? Tiyani Mabunda explains

Former Mamelodi Sundowns holding midfielder Tiyani Mabunda has highlighted the qualities that make the club’s rising star, Malibongwe Khoza, a standout player and a promising prospect for the future.

Khoza was promoted to the Sundowns’ first team ahead of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season after impressing with the reserve team in the DStv Diski Challenge [DDC].

In his first season playing top-flight football, the young centre-back has impressed and is making a name for himself by showcasing consistent performances.

Despite stiff competition in the Masandawana starting line-up, the 20-year-old has been getting some game time. He’s competing for a place in the starting line-up with experienced defenders like Mosa Lebusa, Rishine De Reuck, Grant Kekana and Mothobi Mvala.

Already this season, the talented defender has made 14 appearances in all competitions and scored one goal.

Khoza’s efforts on the field have helped the Tshwane giants to be solid at the back. The starlet has helped the Chloorkop-based side to keep 10 clean sheets.

Tiyani Mabunda, a Sundowns legend, has expressed his admiration for Malibongwe Khoza’s rapid rise. He praised the young defender’s composure on the ball, his eagerness to learn, and his ability to make sound judgments at a crucial stage in his career.

Mabunda emphasised that Khoza’s impact on the team has been significant, particularly given his youth and the competitive nature of the Sundowns squad.

“Unbelievable player, that one. At such a young age to have such confidence and being comfortable on the ball,” Mabunda told FARPost.

“He has shown hunger. That’s what is expected from a youngster. He’s also confident. He has the height that’s needed from a defender, and he’s becoming better at decision-making.

“To be able to step up in a team like Mamelodi Sundowns, in your first season and stamping your position. That’s something we need to appreciate and get from youngsters.

“We appreciate what Malibongwe is doing right now at this time. The club needed a player like him, especially since he is young. He has grabbed the opportunity.”
