Bloem Celtic abandon ABC Motsepe League, eyes PSL return

Bloemfontein Celtic FC have withdrawn from the 2024/25 ABC Motsepe League, signalling their intention to focus their efforts on securing a return to the PSL.

Celtic have been participating in the ABC Motsepe since 2021 after selling their top-flight status to businesswoman Shawn Mkhize. The team moved from Free State to KwaZulu-Natal and rebranded to Royal AM.

The demise of Celtic came as a shock to the football fraternity as the club holds one of the biggest support bases in the country.

In the past, Celtic have also produced big-name players such as Sipho Chaine, Tshegofatso Mabasa, Kabelo Dlamini, Lennox Bacela, Keagan Buchanan, and Neo Maema, amongst many others.

Siwele sold their status after facing continued financial constraints under the leadership of Max Tshabalala. After struggling to push their way up through the promotion, Celtic are seemingly exploring different ways of returning to the Betway Premiership.

In a statement making the rounds on social media, Celtic announced their withdrawal from taking part in the ABC Motsepe and possibly looking to buy status in the Premiership.

“We regret to inform you that Bloemfontein Celtic Football Club has taken the decision to withdraw from participating in the ABC Motsepe League 2024/25 season with immediate effect,” the club said.

“In the best interest of the Free State province and football lovers in general, the club has taken the decision to dispose its name and trademarks to a suitable consortium which is best positioned to obtain a professional status that will see Bloemfontein Celtic Football Club resurfacing in the Premier Soccer League again.

“It is against the above background, although not limited to, that we apologise for any inconvenience that the above may have caused in the process.”

FARPost contacted the club chairman, Max Tshabalala, to confirm the withdrawal of his side from the SA’s third tier and he said, “Yes, that’s true.”
