Hlongwane extends Minnesota stay, chases all-time goals record

Bafana Bafana winger Bongokuhle Hlongwane has signed a new three-year contract with Minnesota United, putting him on track to become the club’s all-time top goal scorer.

The extension, which includes a one-year option, allows Hlongwane to surpass Robin Lod [32 goals] as Minnesota’s top MLS scorer.

The club announced on Saturday – 18 January that the KZN-born star has extended his stay until the 2027 season.

Hlongwane joined Minnesota United in January 2022 from Maritzburg United [now known as Durban City FC] in the South African top flight.

Since his arrival, he has been a prolific contributor, recording 30 goals and 14 assists in 108 appearances across all competitions. Just two goals will be enough to level Lod’s record.

Last season, Hlongwane was the top scorer with 11 goals, playing a crucial role in Minnesota’s return to the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs.

With this new contract, the Bafana Bafana international Hlongwane is poised to solidify his legacy with Minnesota United further.

WHAT BONGOKUHLE HLONGWANE SAID ABOUT HIS NEW DEAL

“Since his arrival, Bongi has continued to improve his game and has had a positive impact on the team when it came to his success on and off the field,” said chief soccer officer Khaled El-Ahmad.

“His new contract is a testament to Minnesota and MLS, and our club looks forward to seeing his continued growth and work ethic contribute to the success of our upcoming year and beyond.”

Hlongwane has four goals in 18 appearances for South Africa and will seek to reclaim his place.

“I’m grateful to be a part of this amazing team again; it means a lot to me and my family,” said Hlongwane. “I can’t wait to continue playing in front of our fans, and I hope for more joy and success.”

The MLS roars to life on February 22, with Minnesota taking on Los Angeles FC.
