Richards Bay FC set to appoint Larsen & Zothwane

Richards Bay FC are set to appoint Clinton Larsen as head coach and Papi Zothwane as assistant coach, FARPost has learnt.

The duo worked together at Magesi for approximately six months before Larsen departed the club after resigning on 23 December 2024.

Larsen’s shock departure came a few weeks after he guided Dikwena tša Meetse to Carling Knockout Cup success when they overpowered favourites Mamelodi Sundowns in the final.

The veteran mentor’s departure severed his nearly 18-month ties with the Limpopo-based club.

Zothwane had joined the Magesi coaching staff at the beginning of the current campaign. After Larsen’s unexpected resignation, Zothwane stepped in as interim coach, guiding the team for a short period before the club appointed Owen Da Gama as their new head coach.

In a move aimed at securing their position in the league, FARPost has been informed that the Natal Rich Boyz have taken a decision to appoint Larsen and Zothwane who will be tasked with steering the team away from the relegation zone.

With this appointment, Richards Bay will have undergone a second coaching change this season.

They amicably parted ways with Vusumuzi ‘Kanu’ Vilakazi before the start of the season, even though he had recently extended his contract with the club.

Vilakazi had saved the Zululand outfit from relegation through the PSL Promotion/Relegation Playoffs.

However, despite this success, he was replaced by Brandon Truter before the start of the season. The team subsequently endured a poor start to the campaign.

Truter was dismissed after a disappointing tenure of just 12 games across all competitions, during which he recorded only three wins and two draws against eleven defeats.

Following his departure, Ronnie Gabriel and Siboniso Gumede took over coaching duties on an interim basis, but the team’s fortunes have yet to improve.

Plagued by inconsistent form, Richards Bay have managed just one win in their last seven matches.

This recent slump has seen them suffer five defeats and draw once, leaving them with a paltry nine points from 14 league games, languishing in 14th place on the log.
