Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates midfielder Thamsanqa Sangweni has found a new home in the KZN ABC Motsepe League, joining Mkhambathi FC.
This comes after the 35-year-old cut ties with Mkhambathi FC’s arch-rivals Umsinga United last season, having joined the amateur side in April 2024.
Sangweni aims to rejuvenate his football career with his new team and assist them in securing a spot in the ABC Motsepe League national playoffs by the conclusion of the 2024/25 season.
The veteran defensive midfielder is not a stranger to the ABC Motsepe League, having represented teams such as BCM Stars and Peace Makers before his move to Umsinga.
In the PSL, he also had stints with teams such as AmaZulu FC, Chippa United, Maritzburg United, Ajax Cape Town, to mention a few.
In 2017, he grabbed attention with his transfer move from The Chilli Boys to Pirates on a two-year contract, following his brother Siyabonga Sangweni, who had been with the Soweto giants for five years.
MKHAMBATHI FC STANDING IN THE KZN ABC MOTSEPE LEAGUE
Mkhambathi are currently cruising nicely on top of the SAFA KZN ABC Motsepe League STREAM B with 27 points after nine games. They are nine points ahead of second-placed FC Drankensburg.
In fact, Mkhambathi are the only team yet to taste defeat in Stream B in the current season, having won all their nine league matches.
As a result, this gives Mkhambathi an advantage to win their respective stream and compete in the provincial playoffs and stand a chance to qualify for the Motsepe League national playoffs, where they will fight to gain promotion to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
Mkhambathi’s next league fixture will be against Ethekwini Coastal FC at home on Saturday, 1 February 2025. The game will take place at Harry Gwala Stadium, with the kick-off set for 15:00.
