Stellies suffer heavy defeat in final CAF Confed Cup group tie

Stellenbosch FC ended their CAF Confederation Cup group phase campaign on a humiliating note after suffering a heavy 5-0 loss to RS Berkane.

The match was played in a fully packed Stade Municipal de Berkane. Stellenbosch FC came into this one knowing they would not overtake the Moroccan giants on the Group B standings even if they won.

Ahead of the match, Stellies had nine points, while the log-leaders RS Berkane had 13 points.

Stellies were determined to defeat The Oranges Boys of Morocco, just like Orlando Pirates who beat Egypt in their backyard on Saturday.

However they found themselves trailing after seven minutes of play when the home side scored through Oussama Lamlaoui.

The Moroccan side kept piling on the pressure and they cracked the Stellies defence-line again in the 15th minute. This time it was Youssef Mehri who darted the ball home past Stellies’ disjointed defenders.

Berkane led at half-time and they kept prodding when action resumed for the second half. Senegalese striker Paul Bassène put the game well beyond Stellies after scoring the home team’s third goal after 66 minutes.

Youssef Zghoudi piled more misery on the Cape Town-based side after making it four for the home team after 80 minutes. Bassène completed his brace on the 84th minute, as Berkane humiliated Stellies.

Plausibly, from Group B, Stellies proceed to the last eight along with RSB Berkane. The Moroccan giants qualified before Matchday five.

Stade Milien and C.D. Lunda Sul who occupy the third and fourth positions respectively are out of the competition.

Meanwhile the Barker led side will receive US$550,000 [R10.5 million] from CAF for their progression.

They complete the trio of Betway Premiership teams that have progressed to the knockout stages of both continental club competitions.

Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns are representing South Africa in the CAF Champions League.
