Tapelo Xoki set to return to Pirates’ starting XI

Orlando Pirates defender Tapelo Xoki is poised to return to the starting lineup when they face Royal AM on Thursday in a Betway Premiership encounter.

The Buccaneers, riding high on the crest of a wave after storming into the CAF Champions League last eight unbeaten, visit troubled Thwihli Thwahla at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

Xoki’s return to action began in December 2024 in the emphatic 8-1 victory over Marumo Gallants, where he made a brief six-minute appearance.

He further showcased his progress earlier this month as a late substitute in the 2-1 triumph against CR Belouizdad in the CAF Champions League.

WHY XOKI COULD GET HIS FIRST START OF THE SEASON FOR PIRATES

After Xoki’s injury, coach Jose Riveiro entrusted Nkosinathi Sibisi and Thabiso Sesane with defensive duties. However, with Sibisi suspended, Xoki is now the frontrunner to reclaim his starting spot.

His last start for the Soweto giants was on May 11, 2024, in a league match against Richards Bay FC. The Bucs lost that match 1-0. Xoki succumbed to an injury that ultimately required surgery and ruled him out for the remainder of the 2023/24 season.

Xoki’s return will undoubtedly bolster Pirates’ defensive line, providing a much-needed experienced presence and leadership.

RONWEN WILLIAMS RULED OUT OF SUNDOWNS’ MIDWEEK CLASH

Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns, who also secured their place in the Champions League quarterfinals, will be without goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. On Wednesday, they face Magesi in a league match at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.

The Bafana Bafana captain is serving a two-match suspension after receiving a red card against AmaZulu last month. He missed the league match against Richards Bay on December 28, 2024, and the Magesi match will be the second he sits out.

In his absence, Sundowns’ head coach, Miguel Cardoso, will likely entrust Denis Onyango with the goalkeeping duties. The veteran Ugandan goalkeeper is a seasoned goalie and should be more than capable of filling the void.
