Chiefs transfer update: Appollis, Lilepo, Morris & Salum
Kaizer Chiefs have entered the transfer market to strengthen their squad following a period of inconsistent performances. Under the guidance of Nasreddine Nabi, they have played 14 Betway Premiership matches, recording six wins, five losses, and three draws.
Nabi has consistently emphasised the need for Amakhosi to bolster the squad if they entertain hopes of competing effectively against rivals like Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.
With the January transfer window deadline approaching, what progress have Chiefs made in strengthening their squad?
OSWIN APPOLLIS
Amakhosi submitted a fresh offer for Bafana Bafana winger, Appollis, early in January 2025. However, their latest efforts also hit a snag, with Polokwane City FC uninterested in selling the player. City are keen to retain Appollis, recognising him as one of their best talents. Their ambition is to secure a top-three finish and qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup, a goal Appollis plays a crucial role in achieving.
He has made 13 appearances this season, scoring two goals for the Limpopo side. On the international stage, Appollis has been impressive for Bafana Bafana, netting two goals and providing four assists. At this point, a transfer seems unlikely.
FEISAL SALUM
Azam FC are determined to retain the talented midfielder, Salum. He is undoubtedly their star player and one of Tanzania’s finest. His impact is undeniable with four goals and nine assists to his name this season. While Simba SC and Kaizer Chiefs have expressed interest in the 27-year-old, Azam have set a hefty price tag of R40 million to deter potential suitors.
It appears Salum will remain with the Chamazi Millionaires for the remainder of the season. ‘Fei Toto’ is contracted to Azam until June 2026. According to FARPost sources, the club has given him an improved offer that could keep him at the club longer. A transfer to Naturena appears highly unlikely.
TASHREEQ MORRIS
The SuperSport United striker is set to arrive at Amakhosi this week, with Christian Saile moving in the other direction. Gavin Hunt has already confirmed the switch. “Yeah, he just came in two months ago. Well, for us, you know, obviously it’s a blow, but you know, it’s a great opportunity for him,” said Hunt. “And you know, I mean, how many players [have left us]?
“Financially [the move] will help him [Morris], so it is a no-brainer for the boy, so what can I do? When questioned about the transfer of Christian Saile to SuperSport, Hunt simply stated, “Yes, he is coming in.” The former Ajax Cape Town forward is currently serving a suspension after receiving a red card against Sekhukhune United.
GLODY MAKABI LILEPO
The Congolese winger is on the verge of joining Chiefs, despite interest from Ligue 2 clubs, Tunisian sides. Following Valenciennes FC’s relegation from Ligue 2, a clause in the player’s contract was activated, resulting in a significant salary reduction. This, combined with coaching changes and a shift in the team’s formation, has necessitated his potential exit.
With the club seeking to cut costs, they are open to selling the 27-year-old, who joined them from Sudanese giants Al Hilal in September 2023. Club Africain has reportedly made the first formal offer, submitting a €500,000 [approximately R9.6 million] bid that is currently under consideration.
An agreement has been reached between Chiefs and Valenciennes, and personal terms should not be an issue. The winger has made a notable impact during his time in France, contributing seven goals and five assists in 46 appearances across all competitions for the French club.
