Magesi terminations shed light on player salaries
The numerous terminations of contracts at Magesi FC have highlighted how much the Betway Premiership newcomers pay their players. Ahead of their match against Mamelodi Sundowns, which Magesi FC narrowly lost 2-1, FARPost reported that at least seven players have received termination letters.
Although the club has yet to make an official announcement regarding these departures, the absence of these players from the matchday squad was telling.
Malawian defender Limbikani Mzava, Bongani Mpandle and former Kaizer Chiefs star Kgaogelo Sekgota are among those reportedly let go. Jacob Everson, Njoti Tumelo, Mokhele Maloisane and Masegela Tholang are also on the list.
The salary details from the four termination letters seen by FARPost add an intriguing twist to this situation.
WHAT IS THE AVERAGE SALARY OF A MAGESI FC PLAYER?
The gross salaries of the four players range from R25,000 to R50,000. To put this into perspective, players earning R30,000 can expect a net income of around R25039 after tax deductions. Meanwhile, those with higher remuneration, such as R50,000, would see net earnings close to R38,000.
According to information gathered by this publication, players who came from the Motsepe Foundation Championship earn in the region of R20,000 – R35,000. Those the club signed for the Betway Premiership are between R35,000 and R50,000 gross.
Magesi, the reigning Carling Knockout Cup champions, have lost their coach, Clinton Larsen, who guided them to promotion. Larsen was recently followed by his assistant, Papi Zothwane, who has resurfaced at Richards Bay.
Meanwhile, the club’s 2-1 loss to Sundowns plunged it deeper into relegation trouble. In 13 matches, the Limpopo side has only won once, drawn four times, and lost eight.
Magesi have amassed seven points as they approach the season’s second round. The general trend has been that a team requires at least 30 points to avoid the chop.
Owen Da Gama, known for his ability to rescue teams from relegation, must begin winning games quickly if he hopes to keep his new team in the top division next season.
