Patrick Phungwayo lands ABC Motsepe League coaching job

Former Orlando Pirates defender Patrick Phungwayo has landed a coaching job in the ABC Motsepe League. Phungwayo has joined Gomora United to serve as the assistant coach to Johnny Ferreira in the third tier of SA football.

The 37-year-old is expected to help Ferreira with promoting Gomora United to the Motsepe Foundation Championship next season.

Interestingly, Ferreira is a coach with vast experience in the NFD after coaching teams such as Polokwane City FC, Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila FC, Venda FC, Sekhukhune United, Uthongathi FC, FC Cape Town and the now-defunct Mpumalanga Black Aces.

The experienced coach recently joined Gomora who are playing in the Gauteng steam of the ABC Motsepe League.

Meanwhile, Phungwayo arrived alongside Ferreira as he looks to build a successful coaching career after having a fruitful career as a player.

The Alexandra-born left-back played for teams such as Bidvest Wits, Orlando Pirates and Free State Stars. During his played days, Phungwayo made over 200 appearances in the PSL and contributed 14 assists.

Although Phungwayo has yet to make an official announcement on his retirement, he has seemingly started his new job.

The left-footed defender is following the footsteps of his former teammate at Pirates Mpho Makola who is coaching Via Sport in the SAFA Men’s Regional League in the SA’s fourth division.

Makola is currently co-owning and coaching Via Sport after having a distasteful separation with Polokwane City before the start of the 2023/24 campaign.

In addition, another ex-Pirates defender Rooi Mahamutsa has signed with Gomora United to add much-needed experience to the team. Mahamutsa returned to South Africa after parting ways with the Botswana Premier League outfit VTM in August 2024.
