Sibanye Golden coach shares key takeaways from Sundowns Nedbank clash
Sibanye Golden Stars head coach Motsitse Molalogi has shared his key takeaways from Saturday night’s Nedbank Cup Last 32 match against Mamelodi Sundowns.
The SAFA Free State ABC Motsepe League team lost 5-2 to the Miguel Cardoso-coached side at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
As a result, Masandawana progressed to the tournament’s Round of 16 following their comfortable win against the amateur side.
Molalogi expressed nothing but high commendations for his players, feeling optimistic about their performance despite a 5-2 thrashing by the Betway Premiership title holders.
WHAT SIBANYE GOLDEN STARS COACH MOTSITSE MOLALOGI LEARNT FROM MAMELODI SUNDOWNS MATCH
The Sibanye coach, Molalogi, said they can only focus on the positives of competing against one of the African giants. He shared what his squad has gained from the match, which they will aim to apply in the SA third-tier league.
“The experience I gained from this match was that we don’t give our players enough chances in the ABC Motsepe League because our level [the league standard] is too low,” said Molalogi in a post-match interview.
“So, when they get to play against a PSL side, our players become frustrated. We, as coaches, also experience stage fright and end up not knowing what to do in terms of the game plan because we are playing against a coach who has an impressive CV with all the coaching badges while I have nothing.
“The fact that I played football is the only thing that has helped me put the team together since 2018. The age restrictions in our league also contribute to a lack of experience. That is some of the challenges that we are facing in the amateur league.”
Sibanye are currently seventh in the provincial Stream B table, with five points after four outings. They are nine points behind log leaders Mangaung City FC.
The club’s next league assignment is against Mangaung City away from home on Saturday, 29 January 2025. The game will be played at Clive Solomon Stadium, with the kick-off set for 16:00.
