Cupido on the verge of Sundowns switch
Cape Town City defender Keanu Cupido is on the verge of a switch to defending Betway Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns. According to multiple reports, the two clubs are in advanced discussions over the 27-year-old defender.
Cupido has another two years left on his deal with the Citizens, and Sundowns may have to part with over R10 million to get him to Chloorkop, as reported by iDiski Times. The Diambars Academy product has been with the Cape Town club since 2018 after joining them from AC Ajaccio B, a French Ligue 2 outfit.
The Soweto-born defender has frequently been linked with a return to Gauteng. Moving to Sundowns may bring him into consideration for selection in the national team, as Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has often overlooked him.
With the return of Nathan Idumba Fasika, City can afford to release Cupido, who has become a key man in their defence.
COULD KEANU CUPIDO BE A REPLACEMENT FOR RUSHINE DE REUCK?
Rushine De Reuck has just moved to Israel, where he is set to spend six months with Maccabi Petah Tikva. De Reuckrequested the loan move in search of game time elsewhere after struggling to get regular action.
His impact faded despite a strong start, mainly due to a lengthy injury absence. Last season, he played only five matches for the first team, spending much of his time on the bench.
He had hoped for a change of fortunes this season, but his struggles have continued. He has only appeared in three of the 25 matches he has been eligible for.
With the CAF Champions League, Betway Premiership, the Nedbank Cup and the FIFA World Club Cup approaching, Downs are bringing in Cupido. They are also set to announce the arrival of Argentine centre-back Lucas Suarez.
The January transfer window closes on Tuesday, 28 January, 2025.
