Chiefs’ Bongani Sam set to reunite with Owen Da Gama

Kaizer Chiefs defender Bongani Sam is poised for a reunion with coach Owen Da Gama at Magesi FC. Sam previously worked with Da Gama during his early career.

The newly appointed Magesi coach was part of the Ke Yona technical team that identified Sam during trials for the prestigious program in 2017. The Motherwell-born fullback joined Bloem Celtic as part of Ke Yona’s final selection, where players were placed in 16 Premiership clubs for month-long stints. Da Gama later brought him to Highlands Park.

At the time, they were playing in the National First Division, and Da Gama provided him with valuable game time as Highlands Park fought for promotion to the Premiership.

With Sam clearly out of favour under Amakhosi coach Nasreddine Nabi, the club has decided to loan him out. Da Gama, currently seeking a left-back for his struggling Magesi side, has identified Sam as a potential solution.

BONGANI SAM’S STRUGGLES AT CHIEFS

The Soweto giants signed Sam from Orlando Pirates at the beginning of the season. However, he has yet to make a single league appearance for the club. His only appearance was a brief cameo in the CUFA Cup.

Nabi has preferred Bradley Cross at left-back, while Thatayaone Ditlhokwe has also featured in the position. Furthermore, Happy Mashiane’s recent start at left-back in the Nedbank Cup further emphasises Sam’s low position in the pecking order.

Sam’s pre-season was also disrupted by an injury, hindering his integration into the team. A move to Magesi could provide Sam with a much-needed opportunity to regain his confidence and playing time under a coach who believes in his abilities.

The reigning Carling Knockout champions have only picked one win out of 13 games. They are currently languishing at the bottom of the Betway Premiership.

Meanwhile, Magesi announced the arrival of Thabang Sibanyoni on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns. Sibanyoni spent the first half of the season at Richards Bay but left the club in December.
