Ex-Orlando Pirates midfielder finds new club

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Abel Mabaso has landed a fresh opportunity to revive his football career in the KwaZulu-Natal ABC Motsepe League.

The 33-year-old footballer has resurfaced at SAFA KZN ABC Motsepe League side Durban Pioneers FC ahead of the amateur league’s second-round commencement.

The experienced defensive midfielder was part of the Durban Pioneers squad that participated in the KZN Premier’s Cup. They defeated UMsinga United to be crowned the tournament’s champions.

Mabaso has been without a club since cutting ties with the Betway Premiership side Richards Bay FC in July 2024. He had joined the Natal Rich Boyz in July 2022.

In the SA elite league, Mabaso also had stints with several top teams. Those teams include Mamelodi Sundowns, Mpumalanga Black Aces, Maritzburg United, Ajax Cape Town, and Chippa United.

As a result, Durban Pioneers anticipate Mabaso to bring a wealth of experience in the third tier of SA football. He is also expected to assist them in reaching their end goal of qualifying for the ABC League National Playoffs and potentially securing promotion to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
