Sipho Sibiya reunites with Truter at Upington City
Former Moroka Swallows veteran defender Sipho Sibiya has reunited with Brandon Truter at Motsepe Foundation Championship side Upington City FC.
The club recently signed the defender for the remainder of the season. FARPost has been informed that the 33-year-old central defender has been offered a five-month deal by the Northern Cape club. The deal will keep him at the club until the end of the 2024/25 season.
Bafana Ba Gucci have been busy in the transfer market. Placed 13th on the second-tier league’s table, they have entered the market to bring experience and youth.
They recently announced the signing of veteran midfielder Thato Mokeke, who has played for SuperSport United, Cape Town City FC, and Cape Town Spurs.
Additionally, Orlando Pirates DStv Diski Challenge [DDC] players Jabulani Mokone and Seth Green have joined the team on loan. The club confirmed that both young players will remain with the team until the end of the current season.
With Sibiya becoming the latest addition, the team hopes for an improved second half of the season. The 33-year-old central defender was part of the squad that moved to Swallows when the club acquired its second-tier status from Maccabi FC in 2018.
During the club’s tenure in the top division, he played 44 matches across all competitions and scored one goal. He played for Swallows before transferring to Marumo Gallants when they acquired the team’s status. He was released in August 2024 and has resurfaced in the Northern Cape.
WILL UPINGTON CITY’S NEW SIGNINGS IMPROVE THE TEAM
Having previously worked with the veteran defender at Swallows, Truter knows Sibiya’s abilities. Despite a positive start to the season, the Northern Cape-based outfit find themselves at position 13.
They have won four league games, drew seven, and lost five. After 16 games, they have amassed 19 points.
The club is in its second season in the Motsepe Foundation league, having been promoted from the ABC Motsepe League.
Truter’s charges will visit Orbit College FC, who trail log-leaders Durban City by three points, at the Olympia Park in Rustenburg, North West.
