Motsepe Foundation Championship side Durban City FC have snapped up Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Luvuyo Phewa in a major transfer coup.

Phewa’s signing is a major boost for Durban City who are fighting for automatic promotion to the Betway Premiership next season.

The KZN-based side is currently occupying the top spot on the log standings in the NFD with 31 points after 16 matches. City won nine league games, drew four and lost three times.

The Farook Kadodia-owned team rebranded from Maritzburg United to Durban City, moving from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.
The move to rebrand was necessitated by the dispute with Umsunduzi Municipality over the utilisation of Harry Gwala Stadium.

Durban City eventually moved all their  home games in the Championship to Chartswoth Stadium.

DURBAN CITY COMPLETE PERMANENT MOVE FOR LUVUYO PHEWA

In a move to solidify their lead at the summit of the log, Durban City have signed Luvuyo Phewa on a permanent deal from Sundowns.

Before joining Durban City, the attacking midfielder was on loan at AmaZulu FC since the start of the 2024/25 season. Phewa left AmaZulu halfway through his season-long loan at Usuthu without making any official appearance.

With the 25-year-old seemingly not on the future plans of Sundowns, Phewa left the club with immediate effect to revive his career in the second-tier.

During his stint with Mamelodi Sundowns, Phewa went on loan to clubs such as Chippa United, AmaTuks, Cape Town Spurs, and AmaZulu to search for regular game-time.

The highly-rated midfielder initially joined Masandawana in 2020 from Real Kings, now known as Royal AM.

Phewa is leaving Sundowns without donning the team’s jersey in any competitive matches.

Meanwhile, the former SA’s junior international is joining players such as Victor Bakah, Olwethu Mzimela, Siyanda Hlangabeza, Senzo Ndlovu and, Siphephelo Majola as January signings for City.
