Refurbished Seshego Stadium set for name change
Seshego Stadium, located just outside Polokwane, recently received approval from the PSL to host Betway Premiership matches and is now poised for a name change.
The long-awaited return of professional football at Limpopo’s biggest township will now be on Saturday, 8 February. This is when Magesi will host Cape Town City at the venue.
A delegation from Polokwane Municipality led by Executive Mayor John Mpe, Magesi FC Chairman Solly Makhubela and Moletjie Royal House led by Kgosi Kgabo Moloto III visited the stadium for final inspection earlier this week.
WHAT WILL BE SESHEGO STADIUM RENAMED TO AFTER FORMAL PROCESSES?
It was during the same visit that Mayor John Mpe revealed the plans to rename the venue after the late Kgosi Seshego.
“As you know, Seshego was named after Kgosi Seshego, who is the forefather of our King Kgosi Kgabo Moloto III,” said Mpe.
“So there is a view from the Royal House that let’s name it after Kgosi Seshego. We will undertake the process; go to the council and public participation like other renaming of facilities that we are busy with.
“So it will go through that particular process. We don’t want to lose history while our traditional authorities are still here to help us. Our children must know the history. As long as the lions cannot write their one history, history will always be told by the hunters,” he further explained.

“So those who have given us names that distort our history cannot just be left alone. We are going to have to show people that they were once leaders. The renaming makes sense from that particular historical point of view. We are happy with that but the processes must all be followed. It’s a legal process, public participation and so forth.”
