Sundowns reinforce defence with signing of Argentine centre-back

Mamelodi Sundowns have reinforced their defence with the signing of Argentine centre-back Lucas Suárez for the second round of the 2024/25 campaign.

The reigning Betway Premiership champions made big transfer moves in the 2025 January transfer window as they look to compete for all competitions on offer.

Sundowns are competing for the Betway Premiership, Nedbank Cup, CAF Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup.

In a bid to maintain their dominance in SA football, Sundowns signed Stellenbosch FC midfielder Jayden Adams and Cape Town City FC defender Keanu Cupido.

Adams is coming to Masandawana with Bafana Bafana experience after forming part of the squad that won a bronze medal in the previous AFCON, while Cupido has proven his qualities in the heart of defence at CT City.

The 29-year-old joins players such as Lucas Ribeiro, Marcelo Allende, Arthur Sales and Matias Esquivel as South American players at Sundowns.

Suárez will compete with Grant Kekana, Mothobi Mvala, Mosa Lebusa, Malibongwe Khoza, and Keanu Cupido in the centre-back position.

“Argentine centre-back Lucas Suárez is the newest addition to the Yellow Nation on loan until the end of the season,” Sundowns announced on their official social media accounts.

Meanwhile, the Tshwane giants have also loaned out a few of their first-team players to search for regular game-time elsewhere.

In one of the big moves, Thembinkosi Lorch is set to join Rulani Mokwena at Wydad Casablanca on loan until the end of the season, while Lebohang Maboe and Rushine De Reuck joined SuperSport United and Maccabi Petah Tikva, respectively.

Another player that left Mamelodi Sundowns is Lesiba Nku who signed with Stellenbosch on a permanent deal. Midfielder Luvuyo Phewa also parted ways with the club to join Motsepe Foundation Championship side Durban City FC.
