English Premier League side table R400 million for ex-Pirates star Munetsi

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Marshall Munetsi is on the verge of a move to the English Premier League, with a reported R400 million offer on the table.

Stade Reims midfielder Munetsi is the target of a substantial bid from Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers FC. The Zimbabwean international played for Pirates in the SA elite league from the 2017/18 season until the 2019/20 season before his move to France.

In the two seasons he spent with the Soweto giants, he made 37 appearances in all competitions, failing to impress as he didn’t score or provide an assist. But he was deployed mostly as a centre-back. Apart from playing for Pirates and Baroka in SA, Munetsi also had a stint at FC Cape Town, participating in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Munetsi flourished after moving to France, delivering impressive performances for Stade Reims. For the Ligue 1 side, the talented midfielder has made 159 appearances in all competitions. In those games, he scored 21 times and registered 14 assists.

Wolverhampton will look to seal Munetsi’s signature before the transfer window deadline on Monday evening. He will be the club’s second signing in this window in January after Emmanuel Agbadou’s arrival. However, Reims are looking to sign a replacement before letting go of Munetsi.

The holding midfielder is set to move to one of the biggest football leagues in the world, the English Premier League. Wolves have agreed to pay Stade Reims an astronomical amount of approximately R400 million, as reported by journalist Fabrice Hawkins.

“Agreement in principle between Reims and Wolverhampton for Marshall Munetsi. Transfer of around €20M. The Rémois want to find a replacement for him before letting him leave,” said Hawkins.

In the Wolves team, there are experienced players like goalkeeper Jose Sa and defender Nelson Semedo. At the club, Munetsi will link up with fellow compatriot attacking midfielder Tawanda Chirewa.
