‘I’ve been told he can’t play’: Gavin Hunt on Sundowns loanee

SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt has confirmed the unavailability of a Mamelodi Sundowns loanee ahead of the Tshwane Derby.

SuperSport and Sundowns will renew their rivalry on Wednesday, 5 February in the Betway Premiership. Kickoff at Lucas Moripe Stadium is at 7:30 PM.

The crosstown rivals will be meeting for the second time this campaign. In the previous encounter played in September 2024, Sundowns claimed the derby bragging rights after a 2-0 victory.

In the current SuperSport team, there are three Sundowns players on loan. This is the trio of Ricardo Goss, Abubeker Nassir and Lebohang Maboe, who recently joined the team.

Speaking to journalists on Monday at SuperSport’s training base – Eskom Megawatt Park, the outspoken mentor revealed that Maboe will not feature against his parent club. This was surprising for the 60-year-old coach as he expressed his disappointment that Maboe would not play.

Sundowns have a policy that their players on loan can’t play against them. However, SuperSport CEO Stan Matthews once challenged that. Goss is legible to face Sundowns if he’s given the opportunity to play.

The talented midfielder  – Maboe joined Matsatsantsa in the January transfer window till the end of the season. He made his SuperSport debut last Saturday, coming in as a substitute in a 2-1 defeat against AmaZulu FC in the league.

“I work on the green grass; he just come in; it’s disappointing because I think he’s going to add huge value to us,” said Gavin Hunt. “We’ve been at this, we’ve done that, I don’t know anything about it. I’ve been told he can’t play, that is a big blow to us.

“With his quality, coming in, we just saw on Saturday when he played, it’s the quality that he can give us in different dimensions to our team. It’s disappointing.”
