SuperSport United CEO – ‘I couldn’t give Morris half of Chiefs’ offer’
SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews has shared the details of Tashreeq Morris’ transfer to Kaizer Chiefs and explained how Christian Saile’s arrival will benefit his side.
Morris departed the Tshwane side after spending less than four months at the club, having joined on a free transfer in October of last year.
The 31-year-old found the back of the net twice in ten appearances across all competitions in the PSL during his time with The Swanky Boys.
Discussing the player’s unexpected move to the Soweto giants, Matthews stated that Morris presented management with a salary offer from Chiefs—one they couldn’t even match half of.
MATTHEWS SAYS SUPERSPORT COULDN’T OFFER MORRIS HALF OF CHIEFS PROPOSAL
“Morris came at the age of 31 and said Kaizer Chiefs want me, and this is what they’ve offered me. And I couldn’t offer him half of what they offered,” said Morris.
“So, should I have a miserable Tashreeq who resents the fact that he could have been somewhere, earning more than double [of his salary at SuperSport]? Asked the SuperSport boss.
Meanwhile, Matthews believes Saile, who was involved in a swap deal that saw former Sekhukhune United striker Morris move to Naturena, will give SuperSport some much-needed pace up front, something he says their other strikers lacked.
HOW SAILE’S ARRIVAL BENEFITS SUPERSPORT
“So, you look at the situation and say, okay, how can I benefit the club? How can I benefit the team?,” Matthews added.
“So, here’s a 31-year-old who I signed on a short-term contract. Okay, and we’ve got other number 9s like [Samir] Nurkovic and Bradley [Grobler], but I don’t have someone like [Christian] Saile that can go behind [the defence].
“He can get behind the defence, he can break the line, he’s got that added pace which Nurkovic and Bradley do not have. So, for me, I’m going to be practical. Morris, Bradley and Nurkovic together, all three, none of them had pace.”
