Mamelodi Sundowns defender-cum-midfielder Kegan Johannes has reflected on his slow start since joining the club at the start of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season.

Johannes was one of Sundowns’ major transfer coups after signing from arch-rivals SuperSport United in July 2024. The 23-year-old attracted the interest of Masandawana following his impressive performances with Matsatsantsa in the past few seasons.

In his stay with Matsatsantsa, Johannes made 65 appearances across all competitions, scored four goals and provided one assist.

The former SA junior international joined Sundowns alongside Asekho Tiwani, Iqraam Rayners, Arthur Sales, and Kobamelo Kodisang.

Since his arrival at Chloorkop during the off-season, the highly-rated defender has featured in two games in all competitions.

Meanwhile, Johannes will be looking to face his former side when Sundowns clash with SuperSport in the Tshwane Derby on Wednesday night at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.

Speaking ahead of the crucial league match, Johannes says his early days at Downs were affected by the injury he was carrying from SuperSport.

“So far at the club, my stay has been magnificent, but I think coming to the team with an injury obviously has been the mental side that I need to overcome,” said Johannes.

“Now, seeing that I’m fit and getting back to match fitness, it takes time, and with the bunch of great players we have in the team, I can only grow as an individual and as a footballer.”

Kegan Johannes further shed light on his side’s preparations for the derby. “The preparations for the derby are going great. It’s the Tshwane Derby, and as you know, derbies are always difficult; you can’t predict what will happen.

“So we are looking at ourselves and not the log position of the opponents; we have to go there well prepared because, in a derby, anything can happen.”
