Municipality reacts to embarrassing Seshego Stadium lights incident
The Polokwane Municipality has refuted suggestions that they were caught unprepared following the embarrassing Seshego Stadium floodlights incident on Tuesday.
The stadium in Limpopo played host to a Betway Premiership match between Magesi FC and Chippa United on Tuesday night. It was the first Premiership match hosted at the venue in 23 years.
With the excitement from the Seshego community and the surrounding areas, fans came out in numbers to witness the historic occasion. But they were denied action after a floodlight failure two minutes into the match.
There was a 30-minute wait before play could resume. It took 13 minutes for the match to be stopped after another floodlight failure. After some discussions, the match was suspended and moved to Wednesday afternoon.

“All the preparations were done. Call it testing, time and again. We didn’t just do the testing today,” MMC for Sports, Arts, and Culture in the Municipality Jerry Mamabolo explained.
“The testing was done and even before the game. Unfortunately, the bigger lights take time to come back on. So we did the testing, and we were satisfied and ready. What you have seen today [Tuesday] is very unfortunate, and it was unexpected,” he added.
POLOKWANE MUNICIPALITY LAUNCH AN INVESTIGATION INTO SESHEGO STADIUM FLOODLIGHT INCIDENT
“We are very displeased about what happened tonight. We are investigating what might have cost whatever happened tonight with the lights going off during the game,” he said.
“Our wish as Polokwane is to make sure that we take these games to our townships and to make our people happy. But what happened today showed us that there is still a lot of work to be done, and we shall, by all means, investigate and give a full report of what really transpired tonight.
“We are going to be here all night just to see if these lights will go off again. As you can see, the lights are still on. So we will be here until late.”
