The two former Orlando Pirates players who inspire Mabasa
Orlando Pirates forward Tshegofatso Mabasa has named two former Buccaneers players as sources of inspiration.
The 28-year-old has been outstanding for the Soweto giants in the 2024/25 Betway Premiership campaign, having featured in 27 matches and contributed nine goals so far.
Overall, the talented frontman has made 111 appearances and found the back of the net on 40 occasions for The Sea Robbers.
Mabasa had his fair share of struggles at Pirates, which saw home being sent out on loan spells to Sekhukhune United and the now-defunct Moroka Swallows, respectively.
However, he has since come back much stronger, serving his doubters humble pie and proving what he can do whenever he steps on the field of play.
WHO ARE THE TWO PLAYERS TSHEGOFATSO MABASA LOOKED UP TO
The former Bloemfontein Celtic man revealed that he drew inspiration from the late Lesley Manyathela and Katlego Mashego, who also played as strikers for The Mighty Buccaneers.
He acknowledged the commendable effort the pair displayed during their time at the club, noting their constant dedication to the badge.
“I think there are two players: Lesley Manyathela and Katlego Mashego. For me, those were the players who did well for the club,” said Mabasa.
“Look, they were strikers as well. The amount of work they used to do is great and wonderful – something really admirable.
“They are people whom I modelled my game around. I have tried to emulate what they have done for this wonderful club. The fact that I grew up supporting this club and watching them play, and the people that I looked up to, means a lot to me to break their records and make them mine.”
The Bafana Bafana international looks set to continue producing stellar displays and guides Pirates to the promised land in the domestic competitions and CAF Champions League.
