Cardoso lays out timeline for Sundowns to reach desired level

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has predicted when his team will reach his desired level having taken over just in less than two months ago.

The Portuguese tactician was appointed in December, taking over from Manqoba Mngqithi, who was sacked following an inconsistent start to the season.

Cardoso has had a good start to his tenure at the Tshwane giants, winning 11, drawing two, and losing only one of the 14 matches he has overseen across all competitions.

Notably, they’ve won all six of their league games since his arrival, putting them in first place in the Betway Premiership with 39 points after 14 matches.

A mouthwatering clash awaits Cardoso and his troops in the league as they take on title rivals Orlando Pirates at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday, 8 February, at 3:30 PM.

Cardoso, speaking at the pre-match press conference, had words of praise for The Buccaneers, who have been impressive across all competitions under the guidance of Jose Riveiro.

“It’s a team that has a style, that wants to go for something, a team that has years of work already with this coach, that gives him, obviously, an opportunity to grow the team in the way he wants,” said Cardoso.

WHEN WILL SUNDOWNS REACH THE LEVEL MIGUEL CARDOSO WANTS

Meanwhile, Cardoso thinks it will take a year or a year and a half for his team to play the way he wants.

“I think we are in the right moment also, but I also believe that in one year, in one and a half years, our team will be stronger than it is in the moment. As I see it, that’s the work he [Jose Riveiro] already did [with Pirates],” he continued.

“But that doesn’t take off or add anything because we have our good moments; we have a lot of things to put on the table. In this case, on the pitch, it will be a wonderful clash between the teams for sure.

“Let’s hope we do it in the right way, and we win the match, the most important thing.”
