SAFA boss Danny Jordaan cleared of theft, faces remaining fraud allegations
The State has dropped the theft charges against Danny Jordaan, the president of the SA Football Association [SAFA], and his co-accused, Gronie Hluyo, who serves as SAFA’s Chief Financial Officer [CFO].
This decision was revealed by the prosecution during a court appearance on Friday. Jordaan, Hluyo, and businessman Trevor Neethling, who was previously a journalist, appeared in the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Palm Ridge.
State advocate Moagi Malebati confirmed that the State has amended its charge sheet, withdrawing the three theft charges against Jordaan and Hluyo. However, the SAFA duo still face three counts of fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit fraud.
Jordaan, who was also a member of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Organising Committee, was arrested in November 2024 on accusations of using R1.3 million from SAFA for personal gain.
The SAFA president faces allegations of employing a private security firm for his own protection and a public relations agency without the approval of the SAFA board. The 73-year-old was given bail of R20,000 along with co-accused Gronie Hluyo and Neethling.
The spokesperson for the NPA, Phindi Mjonondwane, has clarified the reasons behind the dismissal of theft charges against Jordaan.
“Well, you would recall that at this stage, we have presented to the court a provisional charge sheet. So, once information becomes available—information that changes the completion of the case, the state, in terms of the law, can still alter the charge sheet depending on the information that becomes available, as we can still add or remove charges, as we have done,” Mjonondwane told Newzroom Afrika.
“But once we reach the plea and trial stage, we have to provide the court with our final charge sheet.”
SAFA PRESIDENT DANNY JORDAAN COURT CASE POSTPONED
The trio made a third court appearance on Friday, 7 February. The case has since been postponed to Friday, August 2025.
Meanwhile, Jordaan and Hluyo’s intention to have the matter struck off the role was dismissed by Magistrate Sheron Soko-Rantao.
