Da Gama reveals medical team’s advice on Makhubu’s injury

Magesi FC head coach Owen Da Gama has shared the medical team’s assessment regarding the injury of talented forward Wonderboy Makhubu.

The well-travelled mentor – was speaking after Magesi’s 2-0 win over Cape Town City FC in a Betway Premiership tie at Seshego Stadium in Limpopo on Saturday afternoon.

Goals from Mcedi Vandala and Lehlohonolo Mtshali were enough to earn the Dikwena Tsa Meetse all three points at home, which saw them leapfrog Royal AM on the log standings.

With the win, Magesi find themselves in position 15 on the table with 11 points after 16 outings. The Limpopo club are now three points ahead of 16th-placed Thwihli Thwahla.

But Wonderboy Makhubu’s match was cut short after just 28 minutes due to a knee injury. He was subsequently replaced by recent signing, Thabang Sibanyoni.

WHAT OWEN DA GAMA SAID ABOUT WONDERBOY MAKHUBU’S SETBACK

Da Gama explained that Makhubu’s first-half substitution was a direct result of the medical team’s recommendations. He expressed hope that the injury is not serious, emphasising Makhubu’s importance to Magesi’s success.

“The medical team advised us to take Makhubu off because he had an extension on his knee, and they also asked us to take Lehlogonolo Mokone out, who they had cleared to play before the game. We had to listen to the professionals [the club’s medical team],” Da Gama told journalists at Seshego Stadium.

“I’m very worried about his injury. He is a very influential player on this team. But we had to take him off because his future is more important than one game. The medical team will do a proper assessment tomorrow.

“He still has a long future ahead of him. We were not going to take chances and aggravate it further or put him in a worse situation. We still need him to help us save the team.”

Da Gama added: “However, he was absolutely brilliant; he created the second goal. It was refreshing to have a player of his calibre who can come on and do the business.”
